Summer has just about arrived, the airwaves are gradually becoming filled with the same five radio smashes and we could do desperately with a worthy escape from the handpicked favourites of the upcoming festival season.
Thankfully, Essex five-piece, Courts, could act as the saviour with their latest single, True Say.
True Say is the lead single from the band’s latest EP; Back of the Mind, which will be available on June 15 from Kitsune Records.
Courts have built a reputation amongst some of music’s most respected pundits and artists such as Beats 1’s Julie Adenuga and Elton John for their unforgettable style which bridges the gap between indie pop and the grime scene in a way that few artists are doing at the moment.
True Say is the perfect indicator of this.
The track opens with chorus dripping guitar work and a punchy bass line with the perfect end to a repeated phrase that will have your more confident mate throw a double clap in there like he’s listening to Patrice Rushen‘s Forget Me Nots for the first time ever.
If this is the first Courts track you have heard, when the trio of guitars, with a touch of the Bombay Bicycle Clubs about it, drop out and make way for the rhythm section to drive the beat, the vocals are very different to what had been led to believe.
The hippy, spaced out cousin of grime is one way it could be described.
The clash of funk, indie-pop and grime works perfectly.
Essex twang and all, the bars are slick, layered, observational and the chilled flow means it can be easily sang along to after a few too many in the sun.
Whatever the weather, this track puts you in the summer mood and if you are an indie-pop lover, will be your summer’s perfect soundtrack.
